Grace vs Performance & “The Shack”

17 03 2008

Sometimes God signals very clearly that He wants to work on something in you…

My pastor, Brady Boyd,  has been teaching on a fundamental of the faith–grace.  Through this seven week series, he has addressed many of the pre-conceived notions about what grace is and isn’t.  I’ve got to admit, this series kind of sneaked up on me…  I really thought I had this subject already nailed.

During this time I was also given an amazing book, “The Shack” by William P Young, by a good friend who is on staff at a north Denver church.  His pastor had the entire staff read the book and discuss it together.  Chris said it changed his life, so I thought I’d give it a go.  The first night, I was up until 1:30 am reading.  I got halfway through the book.  I couldn’t put it down–It turned into some of the most intimate quiet times I’ve ever had with the Lord.  I finished the book up in another sitting, and am still processing all that I read.  I’ve passed the book off to my wife to read, but I’ve been  stealing it back occassionally because I can’t wait to read it again.  I’ve already started underlining important parts.  The book is going to look like a red letter Bible before I’m done–I’m firing up the highlighter every time the characters of God opens their mouth.  To say this is a favorite book is an understatement.  It’s easily cracked my list of top ten books of all time.  The pictures of God it paints are unforgettable–and deeply moving.

All of this to say, God has had something else He wanted to show me about grace–and about how I have related to Him.  I can’t do anything to earn His love.  There is nothing that I could do to make Him love me any more–or any less.  All that He truly wants is for me to enjoy relationship with Him.  To really grasp that is truly freeing….
